Sometimes there’s nothing else for it, but to get down and dirty in a creative space and MAKE, CREATE and DO something. There are oodles of creative course, classes and workshops across London and I have picked ten of my favourites below.
If you know of others that you think may have passed me by, please let me know! I love this kind of thing – it makes me put down the phone, step way from my computer and learn something new in this gorgeous city.
Now, where’s my sewing box…
Make Your Own Knickers at The Old School Club
Unit 141, Battersea Business Centre, 99-109 Lavender Hill, London, SW11 5QL
Making my own knickers is right up there on the most sensible thing I could do list. No matter where I buy pants from, they’re too small, too big (unusual), too lacy or too wedgyfying. So here’s my solution – make my own! Job done.
Screen Printing at Print Club London
Unit 3, 10-28 Millers Avenue, Dalston, London, E8 2DS
Print Club London runs three different courses – one for beginners, a deluxe one and an evening one. So there’s something for everyone and you can be wearing your own t-shirt design before you know it.
I Make Knots Say Whaaaat! at Drink Shop Do
9 Caledonian Road, Kings Cross, London, N1 9DX
I love Drink Shop Do – a gorgeous cafe with loads of wacky courses and classes. And amazing cake. So go forth – make pretty knotted jewellery and eat yourself silly with carrot cake. And chocolate cake. And blueberry cake. And lemon drizzle cake.
Pottery classes at Hackney City Farm
Hackney City Farm, 1a Goldsmiths Row, London, E2 8QA
You remember that scene in Ghost? Exactly. That could be you. Just without Patrick Swayze. And hopefully no other super natural beings.
Traditional lampshade making at The Goodlife Centre
122 Webber Street, London, SE1 0QL
The Goodlife Centre is a haven of creative learning in Waterloo, filled to the brim with boutique practical workshops, of which this lampshade making course is one of them. No more excuses for shabby lighting – make yourself a dazzling beauty.
Graffiti at Alternative London
The Alternative London Bus, 1-3 Rivington St, London, EC2A 3DT
Fulfil your rebellious teenage dreams at this graffiti class – you get to actually spray paint on actual stuff. Brilliant.
Life drawing class at London Life Drawing Society
Various locations
I’d be absolutely useless at this, I’m certain. But if developing your drawing skills is on your to do list – get yourself down to this life drawing class pronto. But no giggling.
After Dinner Art at Paint Jam
Various locations
Paint Jam London is ‘the studio for everyone’: Believing that art is good for you, they provide a platform for art and creativity for all. Practicing and supporting art as a nourishing and engaging activity, their workshops are designed to activate the imagination and inspire.
Flower Design & Arrangement at Academy of Flowers
St Martin’s Courtyard, 9 Slingsby Place, Covent Garden, London, WC2E 9AB
What a treat this would be! I’d love to do one of their gorgeous courses – they’re not cheap but they’re definitely worth it. Especially if you’re thinking of making flowers a bigger part of your life and opening up a florist is on the agenda. After ‘buy milk’ and ‘tidy house.’
Upholstery course at The Good Life Centre
122 Webber Street, London, SE1 0QL
Say cheerio to your weary furniture and give your chairs a new lease of life by learning how to DO IT YOURSELF. Now, wouldn’t that be something?
